ABOUT

We are a new dance community that centers those who are bipoc, those who are queer, and those who are both. This new dance reality cultivates a fully expressed community that is moving towards liberation.  Together, we will groove, strut, and sweat. Together, we will holler, cry, and laugh -- in rhythm and in unity. We center the Black, the Brown, and Queer.  That’s because now, more than ever, we need new visions to create a thriving world for all humans–no matter who we love, how we identify ourselves, or the amount of melanin in our skin.

From Marsha P. Johnson, Howard Thurman, Kahinde Wiley, Grace Lee Bogss, Nina Simone, Robin Wall Kimmerer, and Grace Jones we bring to life what visionaries dreamed for us. We are building our own tools to dismantle the master’s house. We are a community where we're actively learning together and moving our values into action.

The dance upholds a high standard of values, safety, and integrity. Consent and harm reduction are not mere signs or policies but core values and how we expect one another to show up.  We build community with our collective movement and  our meaningful dialogues with each other. On the dance floor we connect non-verbally, allowing us to be fully present in our individual and collective movement. Off the dance floor, there are intentional spaces for verbal connections, so we can get to know each other, deepen relationships, and cultivate the seeds of  community. We join the dance space sober and substance free, and we eliminate electronics so we can be present with each other and respect each others’ privacy.

We actively avoid problematic dynamics we've observed in conscious community dance spaces like spiritual bypassing, overly concentrated and patriarchal power structures, cultural appropriation, heteronormativity, POC tokenism, and cruising.  We want dance spaces that tackle hard and difficult topics soberly and honestly when they inevitably come up, with procedures and policies built collectively by a group that represents its members.  We all put up the mirror to examine our own gaps and do our work.
